Clare Brophy started Companion Stairlifts in 2003 with the hope that her passion for excellence would help her take on the industry’s big hitters. Fast forward 13 years and you’ll see she managed to do that and then some! After a hugely successful partnership with Age UK (contributing over £8 million) and a merger with Handicare Group (a large multi-national), the company is on target to achieve £21 million in turnover this year. 5. Nurse to Award Winning Businesswoman
Back in 2000, Jan Flawn set up P J Care based on her commitment to providing specialised, high-quality care to vulnerable residents with complex needs. Her decision to step away from nursing to become an entrepreneur – so she could offer the best care possible – was recognised in 2014 when Jan was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. 6. The New Breed Of Entrepreneurs – Age Is Just A Number
Tricia Cusden is the founder and MD of Look Fabulous Forever – a makeup brand of online products specifically for older skin. Following careers in teaching and management training, she re-trained as a makeup artist and was 65 before starting the business. The company has a strong pro-age ethos – celebrating beauty in older faces, and aims to give older women confidence about their age and appearance. Read more here
7. From Farmyard To A Multi-Million Business
When Sally set up Sally’s Cottages, a holiday cottage agency, she had just £1,000 to invest in it. The company now looks after 425 cottages and took £6.5million worth of bookings last year.
