It’s certainly no secret that we still have lots to do to facilitate gender parity in the workplace, especially in C-suite positions. However, while female representation at leadership level is poor, the fact is that we’re heading in the right direction overall.
In the five years between 2015 and 2020, the percentage of women in Senior Vice President positions in the United States increased from 23% to 28%, while the number of women in C-suite roles rose from 17% to 21%. We may not be where we want, but the figures do show that more women are being elevated into highly prominent positions.
And so, one of the biggest concerns right now is that, following decades of being overlooked in the workplace, some women could be feeling unprepared for this change; wary about walking into a position that has largely been filled by a male. They may feel as though they don’t belong. In fact, a recent KPMG study found that three quarters of female executives experience ‘imposter syndrome’, with nearly half blaming their feelings of pretence on never expecting to reach the level of success they’re at.
